INDIAThe Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) new desalination project near Manori is on hold for now. Two months after getting a detailed project report from an appointed consultant, BMC still hasn’t initiated any proposal. The plant is estimated to produce 200,000 m3/d and is projected to cost $428 million.

BMC had appointed IDE Water Technologies Ltd., to prepare a proposal and engaged SMEC India to evaluate the study and designs prepared by IDE. After submitting the detailed project report the consultant approved the design, but BMC has remained inactive ever since. (Mid-Day)

AUSTRALIABelmont Wastewater Treatment Works is undertaking offshore investigations ahead of construction of the Belmont desalination plant. The Belmont project was announced last year and will have a production capacity of 30,000 m3/d. As part of the project a jack-up barge was positioned offshore to take core samples from the seabed using a drill rig. The offshore and onshore investigations at Belmont South will take about a month to complete. Pending final planning approvals, construction of the desalination plant is expected to start in 2024.
