GERMANYFloating WINDdesal (FWD) is a European industry initiative developing a new technology concept that combines a desalination plant and a floating offshore wind turbine, both supported by a floating semisubmersible structure. The technology will be implemented in the Middle East region later this year.

At present three modules of varying sizes are in preparation, with respective water treatment capacities of 15,000, 30,000 and 50,000 m3/d. Utilizing a semi-submersible support structure, partially derived from deep water drilling rigs and production platforms, makes the concept suitable for deep water locations and reduces the impact of desalination on the maritime and terrestrial environment.

The project is being developed by an industry partnership comprising of system partners thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions, CRIST Shipyard, SYNLIFT Industrial Products and technology partners Prysmian Group, Boll&Kirch Filterbau, AEROVIDE, StoGda Ship Design & Engineering, and EMS Maritime Offshore. The Germany based company SIP is responsible for project management and general planning. (Offshore)

INDIAThe Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to build a 200,000 m3/d desalination plant to address water shortage in the city of Mumbai. The civic body’s standing panel has given its ‘in-principal’ approval to build the plant as well as hiring consultants to prepare a detailed project report. I.D.E. Water Technologies has already submitted an unsolicited proposal according to BMC. The plant is estimated to cost $296.3 million and operational costs of the plant are estimated at $355.5 million for the next two decades. BMC is targeting 12 hectares of government land at Manori for the plant’s location. (Water Technology)

The Andhra Pradesh Government has formed an expert committee for the conceptualization of a Mechanical Vapour Compression (MVC) technology-based renewable energy powered desalination plant on a pilot basis at Krishnapatnam Port.  The committee will function under the guidance of the Member Secretary of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and will interact with Water Management Expert (WME) GmbH (Germany) and other agencies to examine the feasibility of the project.
